Men’s Moisturiser: How to Choose the Right One and Use It Correctly

Why Men Need Moisturiser (And Why the Wrong One Makes Things Worse)

Men’s skin produces more oil than women’s — but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t need moisture. Oil and hydration are different things. You can have oily skin and still be dehydrated at the deeper skin levels. Skip moisturiser and your skin overproduces oil to compensate, creating the shiny, greasy look most men want to avoid.

The right moisturiser doesn’t make your skin greasy — it balances it, protects the skin barrier, and keeps skin looking healthy rather than dull and tired.

How to Choose the Right Moisturiser for Your Skin Type

Oily or Combination Skin

If your skin is shiny by midday, or you have a greasy T-zone (forehead, nose, chin), choose a lightweight, gel-based or water-based moisturiser. Look for niacinamide, which regulates oil production, and hyaluronic acid for hydration without weight. Avoid heavy creams with occlusive oils like coconut or shea — they’ll block pores.

Dry or Normal Skin

If your skin feels tight after washing, or you get flaky patches, choose a richer cream formulation with ceramides, shea butter, or squalane. These repair and reinforce the skin barrier, which is the root cause of dry skin in most men. Our men’s moisturising cream is formulated to address exactly this.

Sensitive Skin

If you experience redness, irritation, or breakouts from new products, choose a fragrance-free, minimal-ingredient formula with ceramides and aloe. Avoid alcohol, essential oils, and synthetic fragrances — the most common irritants.

Key Ingredients to Look For

  • Hyaluronic Acid — Draws moisture into skin and plumps fine lines. Works on all skin types, even oily.
  • Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) — Regulates oil, reduces redness, tightens pores, and brightens skin tone. A multitasking ingredient ideal for men’s skin.
  • Ceramides — Repair the skin barrier, reducing moisture loss and sensitivity. Essential for dry or sensitive skin.
  • Glycerin — A humectant that pulls moisture from the air. Found in most well-formulated moisturisers.
  • SPF 30+ — The best moisturisers for men double as daily sun protection. UV exposure is the primary driver of visible skin ageing.

Ingredients to Avoid

  • Synthetic fragrance — The number one cause of contact dermatitis. Adds nothing to skin health.
  • Mineral oil (on oily skin) — Heavy, pore-clogging. Fine for very dry skin, but wrong for oily or acne-prone skin.
  • Alcohol denat — Dries out skin and disrupts the barrier. Common in cheap moisturisers.

How to Apply Moisturiser Correctly

Most men apply moisturiser to dry skin and get less than half the benefit. Here’s the correct approach:

  1. Apply to slightly damp skin — After cleansing, pat your face 80% dry. The remaining moisture helps humectants like hyaluronic acid work properly.
  2. Use the right amount — A 10p coin-sized amount for the face. Using too much causes pilling and a greasy finish.
  3. Press, don’t rub — Press the moisturiser into your skin with your palms. Rubbing stretches the skin and reduces absorption.
  4. Don’t forget your neck — The neck ages faster than the face because most men ignore it. Take moisturiser down to your collarbone.

Morning vs Night Moisturiser: Do You Need Both?

You can use the same moisturiser morning and night, but there are benefits to separating them:

  • Morning moisturiser — Lightweight, ideally with SPF. Protects and hydrates for the day.
  • Night moisturiser — Slightly richer, no SPF needed. Supports overnight repair and works with any retinol or active you use at night.

If your skin isn’t particularly dry, one good moisturiser used morning and night works perfectly well. Consistency matters more than using multiple products.

Should Men Use SPF Moisturiser?

Yes — without question. SPF moisturiser is the highest-ROI product in any man’s bathroom. UV rays cause wrinkles, sun spots, uneven skin tone, and — at the extreme end — skin cancer. In the UK, UV index is significant enough to cause cumulative damage year-round, even through cloud cover.

A good SPF moisturiser removes the need for a separate sunscreen step, making it far more likely to be used consistently. SPF 30 filters out 97% of UVB rays; SPF 50 filters 98%. Either is acceptable.

The Primal State Approach

Primal State’s men’s moisturising cream is formulated for male skin: non-greasy, fast-absorbing, and built around actives that work — hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and peptides. No fragrance, no filler. The Anti-Ageing Cream covers both moisture and anti-ageing in one step, and our men’s facial moisturiser is the perfect lightweight daily option for any skin type.
